Spent last week planning the fall garden. The kohlrabi, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower & brussel sprout seeds were started last week in 3" pots so they should be ready for transplanting in early to mid October (the radish, lettuce, chard & spinach seeds will be planted at this time as well). Potatoes, of course, will be planted around September 21st. The onion & garlic sets will be planted in November.

Finished cleaning the garden & started tilling/forming the rows yesterday. After all the rows are formed, I'll apply some 13-13-13 fertilizer & water it in. The rows can then 'rest' for 10-14 days.

Well I finally got all the rows formed & fertilized (I had a couple of weeks that I wasn't feeling very good) so we are now ready to go. I got the potatoes in on time & they are starting to break ground. The garlic is ready to be planted once the temperature starts dropping.

This morning I started putting in the transplants... got the Brussel sprouts & the kohlrabi done, next up will be the cabbage, broccoli & cauliflower. I will then plant the spinach, lettuce, chard, carrot & radish seeds.

Continue planting the garden... Yesterday I planted the cabbage, broccoli & cauliflower. I was going to plant the direct seed stuff today, however I found another busted irrigation pipe this morning that will need to be repaired first (right at the middle trellis where these seeds are to be planted).

The plants are recovering from the heavy rain a couple of weeks ago (7.5"). Some of them didn't make if & had to be replaced. I also had to replant the lettuce, spinach, carrots, radishes & chard seeds. Here is what it looks like today:

Today we pick up our 'Yellow Granex' onion sets which we hope to plant over the next couple of days, along with the 'Lorz' garlic.

Well, it's been about 5 weeks since the last update so I figured I do one...

We have had a lot of rain here & the temperatures have, for the most part, been warmer than normal. As in most years, some things are growing well & some are behind what I would expect...

What do you use to keep cabbage butterfly caterpillars and slugs from feasting on your brassicas?

In the winter gardens, I rarely have any insect problems (other than the ever-present fire ants)... however on the occasions that I do, I spray them with Bt (for caterpillars) or Malathion/Sevin (for everything else).

Very nice as usual,Ranch. Ranch, is it safe for me to say that you and Mrs Ranch grows/consumes 70% of your veggies?

That's probably a good estimate... Depending on how things produce, we give a lot of stuff to our neighbors & friends.

Harvest some kohlrabi for tonight’s supper... Mrs. Ranch sliced them up & is going to make 'home fries'!!! Also harvested a bunch of both red & green lettuce ahead of tonight's big freeze.

Harvested 6 more big kohlrabi yesterday that will go into the dehydrator. This morning, I got them prepped & then started the process...

The fall garden will be closed out in a week... all that is left is spinach, lettuce, chard & brussel sprouts. We will be putting up the spinach & sprouts probably this weekend... It was a good year for the brussel sprouts!!!
