Keeping an eye on the news about South Carolina with Hurricane Mathew.

My mom's house is in Beaufort SC and they got hit by the inner wall of the hurricane and the eye may have made landfall about 20 miles away on Hunters Island. So their house, more or less, got a direct hit from a cat 2 hurricane. They've headed inland and have gotten two brief reports form neighbors that stayed but generally there is no info coming out. Naturally this storm came in on top of high tide.

Anyone on this forum still in the eastern Carolinas? Major Catfish was around there right?

Pulled in the winter squash over the last few weeks. I didn't break out the squash weight alone but I had harvests of 76#, 83.5# and 97# most of which were squash.

This was two weeks ago - the 76 pound week.

There was one last week that I didn't photograph.

This was Thursday - the 97 pound harvest.

Most of the butternut squash has been donated to the local food pantry and some church families who need it. I kept 5 large ones, gave 25 pounds to a co-worker, and gave two large ones to neighbors.

Again for the season I spent $296 and have now harvested 586.54 pounds. That works out to $0.51 a pound. There's a reasonable chance that I will roll over 600 pounds this season.

That's a good crop of butternuts, Mr. Yan... We talked about adding them to our garden list for next spring.

Yesterday, we did the weekly shopping which took a while because we are still restocking... Then we sat around on the back porch & I could tell that my wife was working on something (yes I can tell after all these years). I know from experience that she'll tell me me about it when she was ready & a few hours later, she did... "I'm ready for a puppy"... I told her I'd think about it.

Today is cool & on the breezy side, so it's time to cook. Made bread, a pot of pinto beans & another pot of 'Carne Guisada' (I'll add some dried carrots, onions & potatoes to it this time).

Mrs. Ranch is on a roll. She actually 'told' me to sign the adoption application & think about it on my own time. I told her I'll sign after I see the dog & the vet looks it over (clean bill of health), not before... It's cute but I'm not committing to anything before those conditions are met.

Yesterday we received the 16 LED light tubes to replace all the florescent tubes in the closets & laundry room. This morning, I removed the ballasts & rewired the 4 fixtures (which took about 15 minutes each). After installing the new tubes, I can say that these 'bulbs' outshine our old F40T12 fluorescent lamps by an order of magnitude. The light is fantastic, way better than fluorescent. They come on instantly and are nice & bright!!! God, I love LEDs!!!

Watered all the trees, flowerbeds & hanging baskets.

I installed our first LED light in a bathroom a few weeks back. I like it and was surprised by the nice light it puts off. What can I do for dimmable lights. My house is full of recessed, dimmable can lights.

Yesterday & today we moved our old bedroom set to the guest house.

Ordered 18 cabinets (6 double door units & 12 double drawer units) that will be installed in the master bedroom closet. These will be used to provide clothes storage in lieu of the dresser & armoire in the main bedroom.

We went to town for haircuts & picked up a couple of replacement water filters for the well.

And scratch the pup, it isn't the one.

Continued working in the guesthouse... took down the 'Texas Quilt' & decorative rod, patched the holes & assembled the new bed frame. I ordered the new memory foam mattress (it should be here in about a week).

Picked 7 more kieffer pears for a pie... pretty large ones too!!!

Took today off as two kids are home sick today.

Frost warning in effect for tonight. This would be the season's first frost.

Pulled down the remaining cucumber and melon vines at home.

I would highly recommend the Luminaire DL6D-x13W Can Light Conversion Kit wolffman. They will give you a very 'finished' look & are dimmable with a TRIAC based dimmer.

I like those but I need something with a larger lip around the can hole as who ever put in the cans did a crappy job and the small led replacement lights don't hide the poorly cut holes.

I don't believe you would have a problem with these Mike... If you look at the specifications, you will see the dimensions of the 'trim ring' (which is actually part of the heat sink) is 7.54". That should be more than ample to cover a poorly cut 6" hole

Went shopping today. Picked up 2 king-size pillows & a bed skirt for the guest house. Also topped off the truck's fuel tank & refilled all our fuel cans. I'll probably make a liquor run either tomorrow or Monday.

Made bread & hamburger buns.

Spent the last 3 days gluing/assembling the the 18 cabinets for the master bedroom's closet. I also built & painted the base on which they will sit. I hope to complete the 'sub-system' tomorrow.

Today we made our quarterly liquor run & picked up some stuff at Home Depot that we will need to finish up that project (upgraded satin nickel door pulls & wire shelving that will be used for our boots/shoes).

Pretty quite here too. Installed a new battery in the generator and disconnected the rain barrel - not that it's had water in it as it hasn't rained here of any real amount for a while now. I can't remember the last time I mowed.

Mr. Ranch, I'm glad you are back and apparently the surgery went well for you. I have been out of pocket for the past month visiting my 95 year old Mother in Abilene and fixing or replacing everything I could around her house. Would you mind posting your recipe for the carne guisada?

Both surgeries went well, it's not like I'll ever be 30 or 40 yrs old again, but the numbness in my legs is now gone, thank God.... Between the physical therapy & Mrs. Ranch trying to work me like a dog, I'm getting back into shape slowly. The hernia hurts now & then (I push the limits some times) but the spinal issues seem to be much better for the time being (but it is degenerative).

I'll post the Carne Guisada recipe for you, hopefully tomorrow, whistech.

I went to town this morning & picked up 2 sheets of Melamine Panel. I trimmed them to size & put them on the bed frame to help support the new guesthouse mattress which was delivered today.

I also completed the closet cabinet assembly... Then I cut/shaped/drilled the 1X2 supports for the coated metal shelving. Tomorrow I hope to sand & prime them. It was too hot to do any more...

Sanded/primed the 1X2 supports for the coated metal shelving.

Drilled holes in the new bed frame & attached the headboard over at the guesthouse (I was holding off until the new mattress was delivered to get the height correct). We're still waiting on the table (which is suppose to arrive on Friday)... after I finish it & the coated metal shelving in our closet, I told Mrs. Ranch that the rest is on her (I got stuff I want to do outside). I'll start painting during the cold weather & not until... I hate painting.

Went grocery shopping & then applied 2 finish coats to the 1X2 shelf supports.

The parsons table for the guesthouse arrived a day early. I'll start prepping it for staining tomorrow.

Worked on my cook book...

You're welcome to come in the spring... April & May are beautiful here... both the weather & the wild flowers during those months are something to behold. It's a very nice drive down too!!!
