Made bread.

Killed the fire ant mounds that popped up in the yard due to the rains.

Refilled hummingbird feeders.

I made a batch of Salsa Molcajete that will be added to rice to go with the leftover stuffed japs for supper.

Cold front moving through - lows in the lower 40s tonight, highs for the next few days only in the mid 50s

As is typical the peach tree blossoms and the rain starts just to make pollination a pain for the bees. Guess the cherry tree is the same way.

My tiny cherry tree is covered in blossoms.

And my spinach has germinated in my new galvanized garden bed.

Did the weekly shopping with Mrs. Ranch (it's been a long time)... We left 'Dieter at home locked in his kennel for the first time & I'm sure he barked the entire 2 hrs we were gone.

Fixed a large flower pot that 'Dieter' knocked over yesterday.

'Dieter' was 16 weeks old yesterday & now weighs 48 lbs. As he gets bigger & bigger, we proportionally adjusted his meal sizes. He does like to eat!!! He seems to grow in squirts, one week he gets taller & then the following week he grows longer. His eyes are currently above table-top level so it's a challenge to keep him from grabbing things off of it. He also now has his own chair on the back porch as he likes to sit at the table & watch the hummingbirds when we are enjoying our daily margaritas!!! We are enjoying watching him grow/mature although he bears constant watching... "When he's good, he's very, very good & when he's bad, he's very, very bad".

Wow! Ranch! He(Dieter) got big..and quick!

I saw/heard something while weeding the garden that I had not seen since hunting in south Texas years ago.I heard a low humming coming from the front of my property toward me.It sounded like a tire on asphalt [I live on a gravel road]. The sound got louder and I realized a swarm of bees were going over head. They were at tree height level and I stood and watched as they passed over me.It took only a few seconds and I could still hear them going as they past me going through the woods.

Tilled & formed the row for the watermelons, then fertilized, planted the seeds & mulched it.

Gave up on the wildflowers due to extremely poor germination. I decided to mulch the areas & rethink these areas.

Yes he has. I only feed him premium puppy chow (Taste of the Wild) & raw lean meat which is good for both bone & muscle development. Based on my calculations, he'll be around 90 lbs. He eats like a possessed pig, LOL!!!

Made a pot of pinto beans.

Was going to cut the grass, but I'll probably do that tomorrow instead. With all the rain we've had, the onions are looking like they did last year, so I'm going to pull them early before they start going bad. I'd hate to miss which is normally the best 6 weeks for growth but it is what it is... I cleaned the tables in the party barn & the curing racks in preparation for them.

I found out I got more space at the community garden yesterday just before I went up to the garden.
Now i have two 12x4 raised beds (up from one) and my ingorund bed is 75x30 (up from 50x30). This means I have to redesign my planting map again.

Planted parts of the two raised beds. One bed "will be" my 4 year old son's garden and one "will be" my 6 year old daughter's garden.
Planted / seedied the beds with - for this I had the kids list favorite veggies that we grow and eat:
  • Carrots
  • Beets
  • Spinach
  • Leeks (OK neither kid has had these as they're too expensive at the grocer's)
  • Kale

Made rolled wheat bread.

Rolled_Wheat_Bread.jpg

Refilled 2 of the 6 the hummingbird feeders. We still have about 25 of them here.

Harvested the onions & laid them out on the picnic tables to start curing. I'll clean them up in about a week & then put them in the curing trays. There are a number of large ones, although they are not 'lunkers' (2 lbs +) by any means...

Trimmed & seasoned (yellow mustard & our ranch rub) a pork butt that I'll smoke tomorrow.

Made rice & salsa to go with the last of the beef fajitas & pinto beans.

We picked onions today too. No huge ones, but an ok harvest.

I gotta learn onions from you guys. I just planted 50 feet of onions and another 10 feet of leeks. These rows are "Big Daddy" yellow (?) and "Red Candy Apple" red onions, while the leeks were simply labeled "Leeks". I also have another 20 feet of "Copra" onions that have been in the ground for about 2 weeks now.

Started planting my community garden in ground bed today:
  • 50 feet of Kennebec potatoes
  • 25 feet of broccoli (transplants)
  • 25 feet of greens (direct seeded - mix of chard, kale, collards)
  • 50 feet of onions and leeks

That wore out the two older kids.

Highs about 70 F, it was 44 according to the thermometer on the van when we drove to church this morning.

Got the hickory/post oak coals ready, then put the pork butt on the smoker (225 degrees) @ 1000 hrs. I also made the eastern NC finishing sauce... 8 Hrs later:

Cut the home site grass, then around the barn & along the roads.

Watered the hanging baskets & pots on the porches.

Refilled 2 more hummingbird feeders.

Reformed the onion row & remulched it for the fall. Then continued mulching the rest of the garden.
