I had no idea where they came from, I just assumed they were a nut that grew on a tree... like a pecan, which is not the case. They are actually the seed of a fruit from one of the largest trees in the rain forest. They grow up to 160 ft tall & can be 3-6 ft in diameter. The fruit looks a lot like a coconut & is hard & heavy. Once they dry out, they are cut open & the seeds removed.

I saw this posted on another site & thought I'd pass it on here. While I personally don't care for Brazil nuts, I had no idea how they grew. I found it interesting, thought you might too.

Also learned that Cashews are similar in origin: Where the Heck Do Cashews Come From?

I was vaguely aware of how they grow, but have never seen such a clear picture of them. I happen to like them, as i like almost all nuts, but we did not call them Brazil Nuts when we were kids.

Thanks for the interesting post.

Us either. Thanks for the really cool lesson on where Brazil nuts come from! I never knew that about cashews either.
