Yeah, a lot of people are talking chit about the mayor's decision to tell people to stay when the governor said flee. I'll have to agree with mayor on this one. If I'm going to get rushed by water, I'd rather be in my house where I can make preparations and am familiar with the territory. A mass exodus would have been a disaster and hundreds would have died in the roads.

Word on the street says that many knew this was going to be a mega storm and was under-reported so that the public wouldn't freak out. This storm has a good possibility of gaining tropical storm strength when it moves over water again. And then makes a direct hit on Houston.

I've heard the same thing Wolffman... Someone from Houston or Harris County's Emergency Mgmt. leaked it 3 or 4 days ago to the local press. If true, the Houston & Harris County administrations should be hung.
Harris County Judge Ed Emmitt addressed this issue in an interview early Sunday morning:

“We knew this was coming,” Emmett said. “Unfortunately, we are now experiencing exactly what we predicted.”

Day 4 is more of the same... we received another 6.68" yesterday (although it certainly seemed to be more than that to me). Thus far, we are at 21.52" for this event. Both stock tanks that I can see from the back porch have been at their spillways since early yesterday & I'm sure the other 2 further back are as well.

It does appear that Harvey is going back into the Gulf before heading to Houston/Galveston... It's going to get real bad there since it's already flooded. In addition, the Army Corp of Engineers are now releasing more water from the 2 dams on Houston's west side so the homes there will almost certainly flood (lots of 1M homes in the Cinco Ranch area). This storm will take years to recover from. I do believe that we have only 1 more day to endure & then things will start improving for us. God help those to our east, their nightmare is only beginning...

Refilled the hummingbird feeders... they're hungry lil' things, LOL!!!

All 3 of us are experiencing 'cabin fever', Deiter especially. In fact, I was so bored that I gave Mrs. Ranch a pedicure just for something to do. Dieter is next...

We are now at 25" and getting hit hard again. The eye is back over water and pulling in more rain. So far, I've only seen 4 looters in Houston, they were arrested. They should be hung immediately.

Took vacation for the day.

No ground squirrels today to the total stays at ten.

Cantaloupe (store bought) in the dehydrator.

Pruned the tomatoes.

Still need to mow the lawn.

Hope to get some rain this afternoon.

It was just declared that this is a 1000 yr flood. I made my 7 yr old put on a rain jacket and get out in it so that he will remember.

I do believe we are done with the rain as we only received 0.38" yesterday, bringing the total to 21.90". It will be windy (25-35 MPH) the next couple of days though. The sun finally came out!!!

Refilled all the hummingbird feeders & then put out a new seed block for the redbirds & woodpeckers.

Put out mosquito dunks because you know they're coming.

The ice maker in the main house died... I ordered another, so we should be back in business Friday.

I ended up with 24.3 . The water has gone down surprising fast. All creeks are down.I understand there is flooding in the Columbus[Tex] area along the Colorado river. I pulled my summer corn which was smaller but still sweet.Put all bird feeders back up and refilled them. This will make the squirrels and turkeys happy.Ranch,I have both mosquitos and love bugs.

Made bread.

Smoked some chicken for supper. Killed a 24" copperhead that was under my pear burner's propane tank when I picked it up (I promptly toasted it).

I also made a pot of corn/soybean succotash & a batch of scalloped potatoes as the side dishes.

Refilled the hummingbird feeders.

Got a call from the packinghouse about some steaks, so I went up & scored 2 small slabs (25 lbs total). I'll cut them into steaks tomorrow & get them vacuum packed.

Received the new ice maker this morning so I swapped out the bad one. Easy as 1-2-3.

Refilled 9 of the 26 hummingbird feeders.

Cut up 10 lbs of sweet potatoes & put them in the dehydrator for Dieter's jerky snacks.

@w_r_ranch How do you make the sweet potato jerky for Deiter? I just saw this idea this week and think Preston needs some (we recently had a bad experience with rawhide)

NEVER, EVER give them rawhide!!!

Sweet potato jerky is easy... wash them, then slice them 1/4" thick & stick them in the dehydrator. That's it... don't put anything on them. Dieter likes them dry (leathery) on the outside & soft in the center. It takes about 13 hrs in my dehydrator. Depending on how much you make, you can store them in the freezer & just take out 3 or 4 days worth at at time.
